This Forest of Dean raptor watchpoint produced three acceptable sightings of our large Accipiter in one bitter north-easterly hour. So the Gloucestershire list increased again. Tuesday’s great grey shrike didn’t reshow to push it on further and I left when I’d lost all feeling in my face. Ravens and buzzards had also entertained me in the interim.
I moved on to try for hawfinch again, at last year’s site of Parkend Church. The sky was clearing to take off the chill’s edge so I tramped the surrounding pinewoods but really only landed a couple of redpolls. They were county bird number 145 though; it’s been a good few days for that.
Now I wait to compile last month’s sightings into the Bristol Ornithological Club’s newsletter. It’s a big job coming up.
