I’m a bit confused about what I wrote for the species that today became my 66th on the home patch. I was rabbiting something along the lines of the Phylloscopus warblers not being anywhere near the kinglets. This may have been because I think Pallas’s warbler is similar to a firecrest. It just goes to show: looks aren’t everything.
Anyhow, looks certainly aren’t much when trying to separate today’s bird from chiffchaff, say. Yes, it was Phylloscopus trochilus – willow warbler – and I didn’t even see it. The song though belongs to nothing else and it came from within a bush along our rhyne.
Our rhyne – sounds like some wayward daughter.
